The Hellenic was founded by a group of Greek Orthodox women who recognized the growing plight of elderly individuals left alone and unable to care for themselves within the community. These women formally organized a non-profit organization called the Hellenic Women’s Benevolent Association (HWBA), marking the beginning of the Hellenic Nursing Home for the Aged. In 1970, the HWBA purchased the Sherman Street location in Canton and constructed a 120-bed facility which opened in 1973. The facility was expanded to a 154-bed capacity in 1986 and the HWBA enhanced the mission of the home to a skilled nursing and rehabilitation center. At this time, the facility’s name was changed to Hellenic Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. It was in 1996 that a secured unit was created.
